Chapter Nine
âWas it your intent to make me look bad in front of the Mayorâs Chief of Staff?â
âWhat you referring to? Syndia asked.
âOh, you know exactly what I'm talking about. Don't play that little innocent role with me. It does not work for you, Syndia. You have been after my job since you got here.â
âIâm not after your job, Jane.â
âHell yes you are. You know the way that I run things here. When we put together, something is done as a team. It is not for individuals to get pets on their back. Everything we do is done as a team. That is how I run things in my shop. It is the number one rule.â
âYes, I do understand that and I think it's wonderful. But the team cannot be the Culture Event manager. That can only be one person. So in order for everyone to have a fair shot at it, they will have to present their ideas independently. You are alway telling us how great our ideas are. We have done wonderful things for the city under your leadership.â Syndia stated. âI donât know exactly where the manager of cultural events is going to fall in, but I would think that that person would be reporting to you. Right?â Syndia said knowing that if the plan she wrote was followed that position will be reporting directly to the mayor's office. It will act independently of the planning department. In fact, that position will be working with a team of citizens and business leaders within the city to ensure that cultural events incorporate all cultures.
âNo, that it's not right. And that is a perfect example of why not everyone can be in a leadership position.â Jane hissed. âYou have to understand how city government works in order to head up a department such as manager of cultural events. You have to know what toes not to step on or who to include on the planning board.â
âYouâre talking about greasing palms, Jane. The city doesnât work that way any more. This new administration is not about pleasing the old regime of the city. Itâs about being inclusive of all.â
âSee,â Jane chuckled in a marking way. âThat is one of the reasons why you are where you are and I am where I am.â
Syndia wanted to say no you are where you are because you slept with half of the last administration. Or City Council male members anyway. Well, maybe she slept with the female members too. Syndia, didn't know, but she know that the way that Jane got her position was the old way the previous administration handled promotions.
âThis is going to be an independent position reporting directly to the mayor's office. None of you are ready for that.â
âOh Jane, I disagree. I think that any one of the members our team will be able to rise to the occasion.â Syndia replied.
âWell, we shall see.â
âYes, I guess we will,â Syndia replied. âIs there anything else?â
âJust know I'm going to be watching every move you make during this process.
